Jump On The Social Media Bandwagon

Sometimes on a daily basis I find myself on Facebook more often then I find myself sleeping. Social media has been on the rise and its popularity increases every second. According to Web-Strategist.com, Facebook alone claims 400 million users and Twitter comes in at 75 million. There are many Web sites that contribute to making your social media experience one to remember. With Web sites such as Twitter and Delicious.com, one can find himself online for hours or maybe even days.

One Web site that I have had the experience to explore and enjoy is Digg.com. This is a social media news site that people can share and find articles by submitting links and stories. Viewers can vote on their favorites which will in turn grant the article access on the homepage. So if you really “digg” an article, submit the link.

There are so many different facets when it comes to social media. Not only are there different Web sites to “stumble” upon but there are also ways to monitor social media. Monitoring Web sites such as Twitter can really help a company brand itself. Such programs like Google Alerts and Monitter.com can track any key word making it easy to view the comments people are saying about your brand.

If you are a newcomer to Social Media, try to find a class that teaches the basics in your area. I am a student at Michigan State University and I am in a class called New Media Drivers License. This class is a great social media tool. It teaches the basics plus teaches the students how to brand yourself and or your company. Check out the Web site from the link above to find out more. Whether you are a student you wants to fit with the in crowd or an employer looking to market your company, learning how to use social media sites should be at the top of your list.

A preview of what the class is like consists of assignments every week that ask the student to explore new social media tools and sites. I have learned about all the sites like Digg and Monitter, that I have mentioned above from this class. The teacher, Derek Mehraban, is a social media and digital marketing guru. Along with teaching this class, he is also CEO of Ingenex Digital Marketing. Having a instructor with such a detailed background provides a huge advantage in gaining experience and helpful tips in your social media journey.

Social media will continue to grow and have an impact on the culture and the way news is spread. If you aren’t on the bandwagon already, I would suggest jumping on.
